UNP ready to give SLFP members organiser posts

The United National Party (UNP) is to give Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) members who have joined the Government, party organiser posts, a senior UNP Parliamentarian told The Sunday Morning.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the Parliamentarian said that several SLFP members were willing to join the Government but backed out at the last minute.

The Parliamentarian further claimed however that more were expected to join in the new year, especially those who felt they had no place in an alliance formed between the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

The Parliamentarian further noted that while UNP membership will be offered to the SLFP members who join the Government, party organiser posts will also be offered to a few ahead of the next election.

Three United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) parliamentarians joined the Government last week.

UPFA MP Wijith Wijayamuni Zoysa, Lakshman Seneviratne, and Indika Bandaranayake crossed over to the Government when Parliament met last week.

Speaking later, Zoysa said that he decided to join the Government as he could not work with most members of the UPFA. The three UPFA members were however not given ministerial posts as President Maithripala Sirisena insisted that he would not approve portfolios to UPFA MPs who joined the Government.
